Barbary - Original Art

Barbary. A lion that is regal. And deserving. And has earned the right to share this planet with us.

Also, the subspecies of north African lions named for the Barbary Coast. They have been extinct in the wild since at least the 1960's, but some decedents may exist in zoos across Europe. The number one threat to lions in the wild are humans with wild populations declining 43% in the past 21 years and only about 23,000 remain. As the dominate species, we have a responsibility to protect the others we share this planet with.

This painting combines pumice gel, glass beads, fiber paste, and book pages from The Sound and the Fury. I chose this book as we should be furious about the animals being driven to extinction. And we should be listening for signs and sounds of hope for a better tomorrow. This painting was completed with Golden professional acrylic paints and finished with 4 coats of archival high-gloss varnish.

Sales of this painting support the African Parks Network. They are working to secure parks from the threat of poaching. Their work also combines habitat management, wildlife reintroductions and translocations, monitoring programs, as well as relevant research to inform conservation actions.
